i don’t mean to do it, but my life is characterized by contradictions.

my favorite top (of which i have 8 in different colors) is the perennial oxymoron of style: the short-sleeved turtleneck.

i suffer from one of the worst cases of allergic rhinitis which, by some peculiar stroke of luck, always leads to a minor skin disorder if not addressed immediately. replete with sneezing fits and watery eyes. but i am a maximalist (i surround myself with dust collectors) and i love cats (furry and dusty).

at age 12-14, i would read tolstoy and shakespeare: complete and unabridged. as an adult, i would read konigsburg and dahl: with book report guides.

i am interested in philosophy, but i am annoyed by people who philosophize. just as i am interested in psychoanalysis, but i am annoyed by people who psychoanalyze.

i have worked in two financial institutions in the past, telling people to stop spending their hard-earned money, forget the mindless shopping and the fancy shmancy restaurants and the gas-guzzling air-polluting cars, and start saving what they have worked for, put their money in our facilities, let it grow while they sleep, prepare for the future, etc., etc. and so forth. yet i myself was then a hopeless, thoughtless big spender, unmindful of how much i’ve had to pay, frequently going beyond budget.

now i work in a retail company of luxury items, telling people to come into our swanky, child-unfriendly stores, spend their hard-earned money on very exclusive, very tempting apparel and sparkling beauty products at jaw-dropping (over)prices, we have travel gear (meaning, they’ve got to travel more!) that are virtually indestructible, dinnerware worth a small fortune per table setting and many other shamelessly seductive items. yet i myself have graduated into the miserly stages of frumpiness, pinching every centavo and sticking beneath the budget.
